A two-man project featuring Dan Wieten (Guitars, vocals, bass) and Ryan Aldridge (Keys), The Omega Project are a prog metal duo hailing from Michigan, US. Their self-titled debut album, though impressive, is a record of two halves, constantly balancing Devin Townsend-esque shred with polyrhythmic pop riffs and synth-led atmospherics.
Their previous Karma EP showed the best of what the band could do- heavy progressive metal over complex melodies with a polished tint that made them accessible. And while parts of the album build on that, much of the rest moves away from it into overly poppy territory. There are meticulous guitar solos, a whirlwind of riffs and time changes and the odd Djent flourish, but as a whole the album fails to set the world alight.
