Scion AV have just released another excellent freebie, this time a split of Canadian duo Indian Handcrafts and Memphis trio Dirty Streets. Featuring a single track each, this is a real treat.
When Ontario pair Brandyn James Aikins [Drums/Vocals] and Daniel Brandon Allen [Guitar/Vocals] dropped Civil Disobedience For Losers in 2011, Indian Handcrafts suddenly became the highlight of my year. New track Swamp Child continues the trend of massive stoner riffs, shouted vocals and punk energy, but adds some new dimensions to their sound. There’s more aggression, Aikins drums march relentlessly while Allen’s slower guitar work has a more sinister vibe. There’s a definite evolution from their previous work and bodes well for the next full length.
Dirty Streets, made up of Justin Toland (guitars/vocals), Thomas Storz (bass) and Andrew Denham (drums), are much happier basking in retro bliss. Their track, One For You, mixes the boogie of Lynyrd Skynyrd with the swagger of Led Zeppelin, oozing vintage blues rock riffs are smooth bass. Toland’s Plant-esque vocals are matched by his simple but soulful guitar work, and the whole thing comes together beautifully.
