Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies – Earth Air Spirit Fire Water
Though there was a lot of surprise when Dutch Occult rockers The Devil’s Blood decided to call it quits, fans have reason to smile. They can thank the Devil for the return of guitarist Selim Lemouchi and His Enemies and their debut release. Earth Air Spirit Fire Water is a hulking psychedelic epic, not completely removed from the Devil’s Blood blueprint, but taking it in a much more spacey, jammed out direction.
Selim’s sister and former DB singer Farida makes her precense felt on several songs [including B-side & Coil cover Red Queen] and steals the show when she does. Overall though, it’s a simple but dense affair, difficult to get into but not unenjoyable.
Black Space Riders – D:REI
Hailing from Münster, Germany, Black Space Riders are a quintet and self-proclaimed purveyors of Space-Rock. Third album D:REI is an 80 minute stoner prog mess, jumping from Maiden-esque gallops and Orange Goblin riffs to soft rock and melancholic doom.
Covering pretty much the entire spectrum of Sabbath-worshiping music, there’s plenty of really enjoyable moments. But there’s also plenty of chaff in between and the whole thing could do with being about half an hour shorter.
