Album review: Casualties of Cool – Casualties of Cool

Devin Townsend can be a hard man to keep up with. His latest project, released under the Casualties of Cool moniker with Ché Aimee Dorval, is the result of a massively successful campaign on Pledge Music. The success of the campaign is testament to the Canadian oddball’s enduring popularity as even in the bio he explicitly states, “It’s not a metal album, nor is it meant to be a statement about my interest in metal…This is something different.”
He’s not lying. Combining Ki‘s minimalist songwriting and Ghost’s almost ambient mood music, CoC is quiet acoustic journey filled with dark country, eerie jazz and melancholic introspection.
It’s not an easy listen, and requires some time to get into. but it is a rewarding listen for those willing to put in the time.

The second disc [not reviewed above] contains a bunch of tracks originally slated for Ghost II. Not a million miles away in terms of mood or style, the bonus tracks act as a lighter and more uplifting counter to the somber sounds of the album proper.
